Nearshore Software Development Teams That Work In Your Sprint
Most nearshore software development starts the same way outsourcing does, a scope document, a vendor team you don’t manage, code that comes back weeks later looking unfamiliar. Kore BPO runs it differently. Engineers embed directly into your sprint, in your tools, at 40–60% below US developer cost.
Nearshore software development is a delivery model where engineers, QA, and DevOps talent based in a nearby country, in Kore BPO’s case Costa Rica, join a US company’s team directly, working the same hours and the same codebase. Because Costa Rica sits 0–2 hours from US Central and Eastern time, collaboration happens live rather than async, at 40–60% below what the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 puts as the average US backend developer salary of $175,000.

The Questions Every Engineering Leader Asks First
Why does the backlog keep growing while headcount stays flat? Who’s actually vetting these engineers before I see a profile? And is this just outsourcing with extra steps? Those three questions, in some order, come up on almost every intake call we run.
Fair questions. A lot of nearshore development shops are project vendors first and staffing partners second, which means the moment a contract signs, you’re managing a black box instead of a teammate. Ours doesn’t work that way, because engineers report into your team, your tools, and your standups, not a separate delivery process we control.
If you’re hiring one specific person right now rather than building a team, our nearshore software engineer page walks through individual hiring, screening, and current salary ranges. If you already know the model is right and want the mechanics of how it actually works, keep reading.
How Nearshore Software Development Works at Kore BPO
Five steps. Same five every time, whether it’s one mid-level engineer or a full pod. Nothing skipped, nothing rushed to hit a deadline.
Scope the Gap
20 to 30 minutes on what’s actually blocked, not just the job title. A “senior backend” request sometimes turns out to be a DevOps problem in disguise.
Source & Screen
Live technical assessment, framework-specific evaluation in your stack, and an English fluency and async communication check.
Review Profiles
2 to 5 business days. Code samples or repo access, references from prior US clients, and a clear communication read.
Interview & Confirm
You run your own technical interview on the candidates we already vetted. We don’t ask you to skip your own process.
Start Date
10 to 28 business days out. Payroll, compliance, and equipment in Costa Rica handled on our side before day one.
*US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15% employment growth for software developers, QA analysts, and testers from 2024 to 2034, about 129,200 openings a year on average.
Two Ways to Build a Nearshore Dev Team
One thing we see a lot. Companies assume they have to commit to a full team before they know if the model fits. They don’t. Most engagements start with one or two engineers in staff augmentation, working inside an existing sprint, and only expand once the fit is proven.
Staff augmentation and contract-to-hire cover most of what companies need, one to four engineers embedded directly into your team, month-to-month or with a 3 to 6 month trial window before converting to permanent. A dedicated pod, a full 3 to 5 person feature team, stands up in 3 to 6 weeks for companies that already know the model works and need to move fast, usually post-funding or mid-scale-up.
A common pattern. A VP of Engineering has tried outsourcing once, got a black box of code back six weeks later, and swore off anything that isn’t a W-2 hire down the hall. Staff augmentation, done right, solves the actual problem that experience was pointing at without repeating the mistake.
Roles and Stacks We Staff From the Costa Rica Hub
Nearshore software development isn’t only front-end engineers. Most functioning dev teams need a mix, full-stack and backend, frontend, mobile, DevOps and SRE, QA automation, and tech leads, and Costa Rica’s talent pool covers more of it than people expect.
Here’s where it actually gets more interesting. Most of the demand we see isn’t for a generalist developer. It’s for someone who can own a specific slice, the checkout flow, the internal API layer, the CI/CD pipeline, and be productive inside two to three weeks. That’s a narrower ask than “hire an engineer,” and it’s exactly the kind of role nearshore staffing was built to fill fast.
Coverage runs React and Next.js, Node.js, Python with Django and FastAPI, Java and Spring Boot, .NET and C#, TypeScript, and cloud-native AWS, Azure, and GCP, all verified during technical screening, not assumed from a resume.
Nearshore Development Without Compliant Employment Is Half a Solution
Plenty of nearshore development shops will hand you a great engineer and a 1099 arrangement to sort out yourself. That’s where most of the actual risk sits, not in the code.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division recovered more than $1 billion in back wages between January 2021 and September 2024, much of it tied to worker misclassification. A full-time nearshore engineer on a recurring monthly 1099 contract, working set hours for one company, looks a lot like an employee to a regulator. Not a great place to find out you were wrong.
Engineers work inside your existing repos and access controls, not a shared environment we control. Standard NDAs and IP assignment agreements are part of every placement, and Kore BPO holds the local Costa Rica employment relationship, so compliant payroll and tax withholding sit on our end, not yours.
Nearshore Development vs. the Other Ways to Fill the Gap
The hourly rate isn’t the whole cost. Here’s what each path actually runs once sourcing time, management overhead, and risk get factored in.
| Method | Time to Start | Who Manages the Code | Cost Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nearshore Staff Augmentation (Kore BPO) | 10–28 business days | You, full architectural control | $0 upfront, pay on hire |
| Internal Hire, Domestic Search | ~44 days average* | You | Full US salary plus benefits |
| Project Outsourcing to an Agency | Varies by scope | Vendor’s team, on their process | Fixed bid or time and materials |
| Solo Freelancer | Days, quality varies | You (limited vetting layer) | Hourly, no continuity guarantee |
*Average time-to-fill for a US technical hire per industry benchmarking. If you want the full cost breakdown by role and seniority, see our nearshore software development pricing guide (in progress) or ask us directly.
Who Nearshore Software Development Fits, and Who It Doesn’t
Naming the second list costs us leads. We’re keeping it anyway. A wrong-fit engagement is a bad outcome for both of us.
Good Fit for This
- ✓You run Agile or Scrum and want engineers inside your sprint, not a vendor on their own schedule
- ✓You have two or more open engineering reqs and a delivery deadline already under pressure
- ✓Your codebase has enough documentation that a new engineer can ramp in two to three weeks
- ✓You’re between $5M and $200M in revenue, scaling engineering, and can’t match FAANG-level comp
- ✓You want teammates who attend planning and stick around, not a project team
Probably Not Right
- ✕The role requires US citizenship, security clearance, or on-site presence in a regulated facility
- ✕You hire one engineer every 18 months with zero deadline pressure, a job board will do
- ✕There’s no documentation and no one with bandwidth to onboard anyone, nearshore or local
- ✕You need someone starting within 24 hours, 10 days is fast, not instant
What Engineering Leaders Push Back On First
What Makes This Different
Real-Time Collaboration
0–2 hours from US Central and Eastern time. Same standup, same working day.
Vetted Before You See Them
Technical, stack-specific, and communication screening happen before a profile reaches your inbox.
Employment Included
Payroll and compliance in Costa Rica handled on our end, not a separate problem for you to solve.
Free 90-Day Replacement
If a placement exits early, we replace at no additional fee. Continuity is built in, not improvised.
Nearshore Software Development Questions We Hear Most
Pulled from real intake calls, not a generic list.
How is this different from hiring one nearshore engineer?
This page covers the engagement model itself, staff augmentation, contract-to-hire, or dedicated pods. Hiring one specific engineer is a subset of that, covered in detail on our nearshore software engineer page.
Do we manage the engineers ourselves?
Yes. Day to day, they report into your team, attend your standups, and work your backlog. Kore BPO handles Costa Rica payroll, compliance, and sourcing on the front end.
Can we start with one engineer and scale later?
Usually, yes. Most engagements start with one or two engineers in staff augmentation and expand into a dedicated pod once the fit is proven.
Is this worth it for a smaller company?
Usually, if you’re past product-market fit and scaling. Earlier than that, the bottleneck tends to be product definition, not headcount, and nearshore won’t fix that.
What countries do you staff nearshore developers from?
Costa Rica, through our San Jose office, chosen for time zone alignment with US Central and Eastern, a mature English-speaking tech talent pool, and economic stability.
How fast can we actually get someone started?
10 to 28 business days is the typical range from first call to start date. Senior roles with a narrow stack requirement run longer.
Does Kore BPO only do software development?
Software development is one lane. We also staff nearshore and offshore roles across data, cloud, IT support, and broader BPO functions from the same three-office structure.
