Quick Answer
What should an offshore accountant job description include?

An offshore accountant job description should specify the exact accounting function (AP, AR, GL, payroll, or reporting), the accounting software the candidate must know by name, the transaction volume, the reporting structure, US GAAP or IFRS requirements, and the working hours overlap with your US team. Vague JDs attract generalists; specific JDs attract accountants with the precise skills you need.

Name the exact software: QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, SAP, or Sage eliminates unqualified applicants instantly
State US GAAP or IFRS explicitly; offshore candidates adjust their emphasis based on which standard you use
Transaction volume (invoices per month, GL accounts managed) calibrates candidate experience level accurately

A vague accounting job description is one of the most common reasons offshore accounting searches take three times longer than they should. “Strong accounting background, QuickBooks experience preferred” will attract hundreds of applications from candidates whose QuickBooks experience is two months of data entry and whose accounting background is a certificate course. Writing a precise job description that names the exact function, the exact software, the volume expectations, and the compliance requirements filters candidates before the first resume review.

This guide covers the anatomy of an effective offshore accountant JD and provides three ready-to-use templates: accounts payable, accounts receivable, and staff accountant. Each template is written to work as-is or as a starting point you customize. If you need guidance on the full hiring process beyond the JD, see the companion offshore accountant hiring guide.

Why a Precise JD Changes Your Search Results

When an offshore accounting search takes more than 30 days, the root cause is almost always one of three things: the JD was too generic, the required software was not specified, or the role was described at a seniority level that did not match the actual work. Each of these is a JD problem.

Generic JDs attract mid-level generalists. “5 years of accounting experience” describes candidates who spent 5 years in one specialized function and may have no depth in the function you actually need. An AP specialist with 5 years of invoice processing experience is a fundamentally different hire from a GL accountant with 5 years of month-end close ownership, even though both would respond to the same generic posting.

Unnamed software creates false qualifications. Candidates who list “proficient in accounting software” on their resume often mean they can navigate a general ledger at a basic level. Requiring “QuickBooks Online with accounts payable module experience” eliminates candidates who have never opened QuickBooks and surfaces candidates who can process your invoices on day one.

Mismatched seniority levels extend time-to-hire. Posting a mid-level role with senior-level requirements will attract under-qualified applicants who inflate their experience and candidates who will leave within 90 days when the actual work does not match the seniority they expected.

The Anatomy of an Offshore Accountant JD

Every offshore accountant job description should contain the following sections in this order:

  • Role title and team context (who they report to, how large the team is)
  • Core responsibilities (specific tasks, not generalizations)
  • Required qualifications (software, education, years of experience in this specific function)
  • Preferred qualifications (certifications, specific ERP modules, industry experience)
  • Working hours (exact timezone overlap with your US team, especially for close periods)
  • Reporting structure (direct manager name or title)

The working hours section is often skipped and then becomes the biggest issue post-hire. An offshore accountant hired without explicit agreement on close-period hour overlap will default to their local 9-to-5, which may not align with your US close deadlines. Be explicit.

Common JD Add-Ons by Specialization

Depending on your company’s accounting needs, you may want to add one or more of these specialization sections to any of the templates above.

Multi-Currency and International Operations

Add: “Experience processing transactions in multiple currencies. Familiarity with foreign exchange gain/loss entries and revaluation processes in [software name].”

Payroll Support

Add: “Support payroll data preparation including timesheet consolidation, deduction calculations, and payroll journal entry posting. Note: US payroll tax filing is handled by the US-based HR team; this role prepares inputs only.”

Sales Tax and Indirect Tax

Add: “Assist in preparation of monthly sales tax reports for US states. Experience with [Avalara / TaxJar / manual state filings] preferred.” For Indian candidates, GST reconciliation experience is a signal of similar skill and transferable.

Financial Reporting

Add: “Prepare monthly management accounts package including P&L, balance sheet, and variance commentary for review by the CFO or VP Finance. Experience formatting financial reports in Excel or Google Sheets for executive audiences required.”

Tips for Posting to Offshore Talent Markets

When posting to Indian or Philippine talent markets, a few adjustments increase the quality of inbound applications.

State the work model explicitly. “Remote, full-time, dedicated to one US company” signals this is not a BPO seat role where the candidate serves multiple clients. Dedicated roles attract higher-quality candidates who want long-term career development with one employer.

Include approximate compensation range. Compensation transparency reduces time-to-apply for qualified candidates in both markets. Listing a monthly range in USD or local currency prevents applications from candidates whose expectations are misaligned.

Mention growth path if genuine. Offshore accountants who are early in their career specifically look for roles that expose them to US accounting practices. If you genuinely have a path to senior accountant or controller-level work, say so. If you do not, do not imply it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I require a specific degree for an offshore accountant?

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce is a reasonable baseline for mid-level offshore accountant roles. In India, the Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification is the gold standard and surpasses a bachelor’s degree in practical rigor. In the Philippines, a CPA license is the equivalent marker. For junior roles, requiring a degree with software experience is appropriate. For senior roles, requiring a CA or CPA and 5+ years of experience is common.

How specific should the software requirement be?

As specific as possible. If you use QuickBooks Online, say QuickBooks Online not QuickBooks (Desktop and Online are different products with different features). If you use NetSuite, specify which modules (AP, AR, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting). Software specificity is the single fastest way to improve application quality from offshore markets where many candidates will list general “accounting software proficiency” regardless of actual depth.

Should I mention US GAAP or IFRS in the JD?

Yes, always. Indian CA candidates train primarily under IFRS and Indian GAAP but usually have exposure to US GAAP through multinational employer experience. Philippine CPAs typically have solid US GAAP exposure through BPO and shared services work. Stating the standard you use lets candidates self-assess their fit accurately rather than discovering a gap after they start.

How long should an offshore accountant JD be?

400 to 700 words is the right range. Short enough to read in 2 minutes, long enough to include the specific software, function, volume, and hours requirements that filter candidates accurately. JDs longer than 900 words typically inflate the preferred qualifications section with nice-to-haves that screen out good candidates. If you find yourself writing a long JD, ask whether each requirement is truly required or merely preferred.
