Writing a GIS analyst job description isn’t complicated. But most of them are wrong in the same ways: too vague on tools, too broad on scope, and missing a salary range. The result is a flood of applicants who match the title but not the actual work, and a search that takes two months longer than it should.
This post gives you three copy-paste-ready templates for junior, mid-level, and senior GIS analysts. Each one is built around what the role actually requires at that experience level. Use the templates as starting points. Every organization has slightly different tool stacks and scope, so a few lines will need your specific context. But the structure, the required skills list, and the section order should hold across almost any GIS analyst hire.
What a GIS Analyst Job Description Actually Needs
A functional GIS analyst JD has six parts: a role summary, key responsibilities, required skills and tools, preferred qualifications, compensation range, and a short note on how the role fits into the team. That last one gets skipped constantly, and it matters. A candidate deciding between two offers wants to know whether they’ll be the only GIS person or part of a team, whether they’re customer-facing or purely internal, and whether there’s growth into more senior work. None of that takes more than two sentences.
The required skills section is where most descriptions fall apart. GIS is a broad field. “Experience with GIS software” tells a hiring manager nothing, and it tells a candidate even less. Be specific: ArcGIS Pro vs ArcMap (they’re different skill sets), QGIS for open-source environments, PostGIS for spatial SQL work, and Python libraries like GeoPandas, Shapely, or ArcPy depending on the analytical load. Remote sensing experience, if required, belongs in required skills, not as a vague “preferred” afterthought.
And put the salary range in the posting. Every state that has passed pay transparency legislation has seen application volume go up and time-to-fill go down. Even where it’s not required, hiding compensation adds friction for candidates and produces a worse initial applicant pool. Before you write: confirm whether the role is truly an analyst role (data cleaning, map production, spatial analysis, reporting) or a GIS developer role (custom application development, ArcGIS Server administration, REST API work). Junior GIS Analyst Template (1-3 Years Experience)
Junior GIS analysts are building core competencies. The JD should reflect that: lighter on independent project ownership, heavier on tool proficiency and willingness to follow established workflows. Don’t write a senior JD and add “entry level” at the top. The responsibilities need to match the experience tier or you’ll lose the good junior candidates who self-select out.
We’re looking for a junior GIS analyst to support spatial data workflows, produce maps and visualizations, and assist the GIS team with data collection, QA, and analysis projects. Common Mistakes in GIS Job Descriptions
The same problems show up in GIS JDs across industries. Here are the ones that actively damage the quality of your applicant pool.
Confusing analyst with developer
A GIS analyst produces analysis, maps, and spatial insights. A GIS developer builds applications, administers ArcGIS Server or Enterprise, builds REST APIs on top of spatial data, and writes production-grade custom tools. These are different roles with different salary ranges and different candidate pools. Putting ArcGIS Server administration or custom widget development in an analyst JD produces confusion on both sides. Candidates who can do that work will think the salary is too low. Analysts who can’t will apply anyway and burn your time in screening.
If you need both, write two JDs. Or write one that explicitly says “this role spans analysis and development” with accurate scope and a higher salary band to match.
Vague tool requirements
“Experience with GIS software” is not a requirement. ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap are different products with different interfaces and workflows. QGIS is an entirely different ecosystem. PostGIS is a database extension, not GIS software in the traditional sense. A candidate who has spent three years in QGIS and never touched Esri products will struggle if your entire stack is ArcGIS Pro, even if their spatial analysis fundamentals are strong. Be specific. It filters better and signals to serious candidates that you know the space.
Listing Python as “a plus” when you actually need it
If your team runs any kind of repeatable analysis workflow, Python is not optional. GeoPandas and ArcPy are how modern GIS analysts work at scale. If someone without Python will genuinely hold back the team, put it in required skills. “Nice to have” produces candidates who technically checked the box with a 30-minute tutorial two years ago.
Generic responsibilities
“Analyze spatial data to support organizational goals” is meaningless. Candidates want to know what kind of data (land use, infrastructure, environmental, logistics), what the deliverable looks like (maps, dashboards, reports, API outputs), and who they’re producing work for (internal stakeholders, external clients, government agencies). Two sentences of context saves hours of screening.
Nearshore Hiring Notes for GIS Analysts

But if you’re hiring in Latin America without specifying timezone expectations, candidates in South America’s southern cone (Argentina, Chile, Brazil) may apply, and that’s a 2 to 5 hour gap depending on the season. Remote collaboration tooling is worth a line. Most nearshore GIS analysts are comfortable with Slack, Zoom, Notion, and GitHub. But if your team uses ArcGIS Online for shared project management, specify it. Same with cloud storage for large raster datasets: whether you’re on AWS S3, Google Drive, or ArcGIS Living Atlas matters for onboarding speed. Stating it upfront avoids first-week surprises.
Client Communication and Compensation Transparency
Finally, if the role involves client communication, say so plainly. Some nearshore GIS analysts have done client-facing work extensively; others have been purely internal. It’s a different skill set and it affects who you screen for. Don’t assume the hiring partner knows your clients are external without being told. Posting a domestic US JD verbatim for a nearshore role without removing US-specific language (state licensing requirements, US citizenship/work authorization, US benefits) creates legal ambiguity and confuses applicants. Strip those sections and replace with “must be eligible to work in [country] with a nearshore staffing partner.”
Compensation transparency is even more important for nearshore postings than domestic ones. Candidates in Latin America have seen enough US postings with inflated job titles to be skeptical. Posting the all-in monthly rate (what the employee effectively earns, not what you pay the staffing partner) builds trust and improves application quality.
